Support Music City Disaster Relief

grand-ole-opry-320A Nashville recording musician has put together a Facebook Group to benefit those effected by the severe flooding that devastated homes and businesses, following this weekend’s terrential rains in Music City. Historic industry landmarks such as the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Grand Ole Opry entertainment complex saw damage from the rising waters.

As we are a community built upon music, we invite you to join the Music City Disaster Relief group on Facebook and do your part to support fellow musicians and their families in this time of need.

Cakewalk Rocks for MusiCares Foundation

Save the Date! Two weeks from Sunday, Cakewalk hosts it’s 1st annual fundraising event for the MusiCares Foundation. Throughout the event, Cakewalk employees will show off their talents, performing in a diverse line up of bands and DJ’s. A charity raffle will be held with a chance to win a Cakewalk V-Studio 100-powered Recording Bundle featuring a Cakewalk V-Studio 100 portable music production studio, a Fender Stratocaster with a face plate signed by Blink 182, and Shure headphones.

One hundred percent of the proceeds raised at this event will be donated to the MusiCares Foundation.

Kompoz.com: A Social Workspace for Songwriters & Musicians

We’ve all been there. You’ve laid out the perfect vocal track and a killer guitar solo. But you’re lacking the skills to bang out a drum track to complete your recent project. Perhaps, all you need is a little help from your friends!?

The people behind Kompoz.com are making the process of collaborating and sharing your music online with peers easier than ever. We came across Kompoz.com while searching for collaboration platforms for our users. To our surprise we found a SONAR user group with 100+ members (!) already working together on the site to create a variety of projects. Membership is free, each individual project gets its own workspace and the site supports the use of MP3, WAV and WMA digital music files. They also hold a few contests too!

Remembering the Original Guitar Hero: Les Paul

One of our heroes here at Cakewalk passed away today. Les Paul the original guitar hero, namesake of arguably the most popular guitar of all time, and the innovator of multitrack recording, succumbed to complications from pneumonia at White Plains Hospital. Les was 94.

In 2005, I had the distinct honor of dining with Les Paul at the TEC Awards banquet. Cakewalk had been working with Gibson on the launch of the Digital Les Paul, which included a copy of SONAR Producer, and Henry Juszkiewicz, Gibson’s CEO asked me to join him and Les for dinner. I was so psyched to meet Les, being both a guitar player and someone involved in the art of recording, he represented a double inspiration to me. And getting to sit with Les for a few hours and listen to him casually talk about all sorts of topics ranging from guitar, to recording, to women (yes he was quite flirt, even as an nonagenarian…the ladies at the table will agree) I was on cloud nine. I count that evening as one of the highlights of my career, and I feel so lucky to have experienced it before Les passed on.

Les, we owe it all to you. Beyond pioneering multitrack recording, you had the vision to introduce the world to overdubbing, phasing, delay effects, and more. And where would Eddie Van Halen, Slash, or Eric Johnson be without the techniques you introduced on the guitar.

There have been so many great songs, and countless listeners, that have benefitted from the sonic advances that you brought to the table. Thank you for everything…you will be missed.
