First thing you do is fire up <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cakewalk.com\/products\/SONAR\/X3\/\">SONAR<\/a> to work on a project but wait &#8211; you can&#8217;t find any of your favorite plug-ins. It&#8217;s time to migrate all of your favorite settings, and this handy article will show you how.<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-15570\" title=\"SONAR X3 NAMM Setup\" src=\"https:\/\/noelborthwick.com\/cakewalk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/photo-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"548\" height=\"411\" \/><\/div>\n<p><strong>Set-up<\/strong><br \/>\nThe first thing you will need is a way to move files from your old computer to your new one. The easiest method is with <a href=\"https:\/\/noelborthwick.com\/cakewalk\/gobbler-cloud-collaboration-for-musicians\/\">Gobbler<\/a>.\u00a0<!--more-->You can also back up all your files to the cloud and then open them up on your new computer.\u00a0Alternatively you can also use a\u00a0USB hard drives or memory stick or burn the contents to a CD.<\/p>\n<p>Once you know how you&#8217;re going to move them, put them all together in one place. To do this create a new folder on your Windows desktop, make sure you give it a name that you can recognize later. We named ours &#8216;SONAR Settings&#8217; for this exercise<\/p>\n<p><strong>Exporting plug-in &amp; control surface presets<\/strong><br \/>\nIf you have created any custom presets for your VST, VST3, \u00a0DirectX, or Control Surface plug-ins those can all be backed up using the Cakewalk Plug-in Manager. To do this, do the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">Click Utilities | Cakewalk Plug-in Manger, the Plug-in Manager will open<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">From the &#8216;Plug-in Categories&#8217; pane on the left select the type of plug-in you would like to back up<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div align=\"center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-15556\" title=\"Migrating 1\" src=\"https:\/\/noelborthwick.com\/cakewalk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Migrating-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"515\" height=\"337\" \/><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">Then under the &#8216;Registered Plug-ins&#8217; pane in the middle hold down SHIFT on your keyboard to select each plug-in you would like to copy presets for<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div align=\"center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-15557\" title=\"Migrating 2\" src=\"https:\/\/noelborthwick.com\/cakewalk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Migrating-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"515\" height=\"338\" \/><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">Finally click the Export \u00a0button to save a settings file<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">Be sure to save it in the folder you created earlier on your desktop or a place that you can find easily. If you need to back up multiple types of presets, give it a name you can easily recognize, such as &#8216;VST Audio Effects Presets&#8217;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">Click Save to export your presets<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div align=\"center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-15558\" title=\"Migrating 3\" src=\"https:\/\/noelborthwick.com\/cakewalk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Migrating-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"388\" height=\"439\" \/><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">Repeat for each type or category of plug-in presets you will need to move to your new computer<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Exporting plug-in menu layouts<\/strong><br \/>\nBacking up your plug-in menu layouts can also be done from the Cakewalk plug-in manager and is also very easy to do it:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">Click Utilities | Cakewalk Plug-in Manager, this will open your plug-in manager<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">From the &#8216;Layout File:&#8217; drop down menu select the layout you would like to back up<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div align=\"center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-15559\" title=\"Migrating 4\" src=\"https:\/\/noelborthwick.com\/cakewalk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Migrating-4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"515\" height=\"339\" \/><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">Click the Save button in the upper right corner to to bring up the save dialog, this is very similar to the save dialog we looked at earlier<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">Give it a name and save it to the same folder you created earlier by clicking the Save button<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div align=\"center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-15560\" title=\"Migrating 5\" src=\"https:\/\/noelborthwick.com\/cakewalk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Migrating-5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"389\" height=\"291\" \/><\/div>\n<p><strong>Exporting key bindings<\/strong><br \/>\nLike most power users, you may have configured custom key bindings for your most common SONAR tasks. Thankfully you can bring these over to your new DAW.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">Click Edit | Preferences (Advanced) | Customization | Keyboard Shortcuts\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">Click the Export button to bring up the Export Key Bindings dialog, this is just like the save dialogs we used earlier. \u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">Navigate to your settings or back up folder, name the file and then click Save<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div align=\"center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-15561\" title=\"Migrating 6\" src=\"https:\/\/noelborthwick.com\/cakewalk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Migrating-6.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"510\" height=\"400\" \/><\/div>\n<p><strong>Locating Your Templates &amp; ProChannel Presets<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">Many of us have custom project templates and track templates for different environments including Mixing, Recording, Composing, and Mastering. Without this stuff you may find yourself making tons of new template when you could have just transferred all of your old templates over to your new computer. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">Within your computer simply navigate to\u00a0C:\\Cakewalk Content\\(Your SONAR Version)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Highlight the following folders:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>FX Chain Presets<\/li>\n<li>Instruments<\/li>\n<li>ProChannel Presets<\/li>\n<li>Project Templates<\/li>\n<li>Track Templates<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div align=\"center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-15567\" title=\"Migrating 8\" src=\"https:\/\/noelborthwick.com\/cakewalk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Migrating-8.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"526\" height=\"430\" \/><\/div>\n<div align=\"center\"><\/div>\n<div>Copy and paste these folders to your desktop folder and be sure to transfer them along to your new computer.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p><strong>Transferring &amp; importing your settings<\/strong><br \/>\nNow that you have backed up your settings its time to move them.
