This will return the synth to all of it\u2019s defaults so that you can start from scratch with the sound.<\/p>\n<p>Kick Drums requires a lot of low end. Within Z3TA+ 2 you can produce this kind of controlled low end by using the Sine Waves that are available in the OSC section. We are going for a saturated low end, so make sure to add 3 Sine Waves.<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/noelborthwick.com\/cakewalk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Generated-Sine.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-15159 alignleft\" title=\"Generated Sine\" src=\"https:\/\/noelborthwick.com\/cakewalk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Generated-Sine.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"195\" height=\"244\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div align=\"center\"><\/div>\n<p>Let\u2019s split up the 3 Sine Waves into Middle, Right, and Left. In order to do this we must first activate the Filter Section, select the \u201cLink\u201d button and turn the Pan knobs on either filter. They will pan in opposite directions.<\/p>\n<p>Afterwards, we can use the Filter Bus on each OSC section to pan the oscillators. Panning two opposing oscillators and then using the \u201cFine Tune\u201d to slightly detune them will produce a nice wide stereo effect. Do this to both OSC 1 and OSC 2 and keep OSC 3 centered and not de-tuned.<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/noelborthwick.com\/cakewalk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/OSC-1-Filter-Bus.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-14942 aligncenter\" title=\"OSC 1 Filter Bus\" src=\"https:\/\/noelborthwick.com\/cakewalk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/OSC-1-Filter-Bus.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"366\" height=\"173\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>We covered the value of this technique in &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/noelborthwick.com\/cakewalk\/creating-a-simple-bass-synth\/\">Creating a simple Bass Synth<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><!--more-->Enter the Mod Matrix<\/h3>\n<p>An envelope is a way of adding dynamics and shaping to your synthesizer. Creating a kick drum has quite a bit of \u201cthud\u201d at the beginning and then ramps downward quickly and only sustains for barely a second. Assigning a envelope to control the pitch of the Sine Wave will give it the proper shape that we need.<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/noelborthwick.com\/cakewalk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Mod-Matrix.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-15162 alignnone\" title=\"Mod Matrix\" src=\"https:\/\/noelborthwick.com\/cakewalk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Mod-Matrix.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"505\" height=\"141\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div align=\"center\"><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Our first line of the Modulation Matrix will start with EG1 and look like the following:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>EG1 &gt; 100% &gt; (No Curve) &gt; (No Control) &gt; OSC1 Pitch<\/strong><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">Move to the EG section and activate the block that is labelled \u201c1\u201d by selecting it and then double-clicking on the \u201cAmount\u201d Fader to the right of the window.<\/span><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/noelborthwick.com\/cakewalk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/EG1-EG.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-15169\" title=\"EG1 EG\" src=\"https:\/\/noelborthwick.com\/cakewalk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/EG1-EG.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"459\" height=\"211\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div align=\"center\"><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">Adjust every parameter to 0.00s except for Time and Release.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">Set Time to 2.08 seconds<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">Set Release to 0.02 seconds<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The second line of the Modulation Matrix is virtually the exact same as the first, except make sure that Source is EG2 and Destination is set to OSC2.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>EG2 &gt; 100% &gt; (No Curve) &gt; (No Control) &gt; OSC2 Pitch<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Copy and Paste the EG1 to the EG2 to save on some time. We want both Envelopes to be identical so that the stereo images does not sway to one side.<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/noelborthwick.com\/cakewalk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Copy-EG.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-15155 aligncenter\" title=\"Copy EG\" src=\"https:\/\/noelborthwick.com\/cakewalk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Copy-EG-150x116.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"116\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div align=\"center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/noelborthwick.com\/cakewalk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Paste-EG1.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-15161 aligncenter\" title=\"Paste EG1\" src=\"https:\/\/noelborthwick.com\/cakewalk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Paste-EG1-150x129.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"129\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div align=\"center\"><\/div>\n<p>To add some variation to the synth\u2019s sound I varied the Time parameter of EG3 to be a little shorter than both EG1 and EG2. So the 3rd line of the Modulation Matrix ends up looking like this:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>EG3 &gt; 100% &gt; (No Curve) &gt; (No Control) &gt; OSC3 Pitch<\/strong><\/p>\n<div align=\"center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/noelborthwick.com\/cakewalk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/EG-3-EG.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-15170\" title=\"EG 3 EG\" src=\"https:\/\/noelborthwick.com\/cakewalk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/EG-3-EG.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"457\" height=\"210\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div align=\"center\"><\/div>\n<p>Adjust the Time parameter in EG3 is set to 0.79 seconds, which is a bit shorter than both EG1 and EG2. If you adjust this parameter you\u2019ll start to hear the differences in what this parameter can do to the sound.<\/p>\n<h3>Why is this different?<\/h3>\n<div align=\"center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/noelborthwick.com\/cakewalk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/EG-Curves.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-15234\" title=\"EG Curves\" src=\"https:\/\/noelborthwick.com\/cakewalk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/EG-Curves.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"457\" height=\"210\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>Lastly, for all 3 Envelope Generators, I adjusted the Time curve on each EG to be an \u201cExponetial\u201d shape &#8211; where the curve starts slowly and then speeds up toward the end. The Linear curve shown here on Sustain, Release, and Attack was a bit too slow for the sound I was going for. The same goes for the Logarithmic curve. Experiment with the different curves and you&#8217;ll see what I mean. None of them have the right &#8220;kick&#8221; sound like the Exponential Curve.<\/p>\n<h3>AMP EG<\/h3>\n<p>The general AMP has the Time parameter set to .68 seconds with a Linear Curve type. This keeps the overall sound of 3 sounds from exceeding .68 seconds.<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/noelborthwick.com\/cakewalk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/General-AMP.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-15158\" title=\"General AMP\" src=\"https:\/\/noelborthwick.com\/cakewalk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/General-AMP.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"460\" height=\"211\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div align=\"center\"><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Adding some Attack<\/h3>\n<p>The next step is finding the right filter to add some attack to the kick sound. For now I have a simple 12 dB\/OCT LPF filter setup. The Cutoff is set to about 12k and the Reso is is maxed. We\u2019re adding this Filter to create a small sense of thwack to the kick drum and modulating it by way of the Mod Matrix.<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/noelborthwick.com\/cakewalk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Filter.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-15168\" title=\"Filter\" src=\"https:\/\/noelborthwick.com\/cakewalk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Filter.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"458\" height=\"215\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The 4th line of the Mod Matrix looks like this:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>EG4 &gt; 100% &gt; Fast + &gt; (No Control) &gt; All Filters Cutoff<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Move to EG4 and set every parameter to 0 except for Time. Time can be set as low as 0.01 seconds. You really just need to make sure that you are getting a small \u201cclicking\u201d sound and then you\u2019ll have the amount of attack required for the kick. It may not sound like much at first, but it definitely adds to the sound once you drop in audio effects.<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/noelborthwick.com\/cakewalk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/EG4.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-15167\" title=\"EG4\" src=\"https:\/\/noelborthwick.com\/cakewalk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/EG4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"457\" height=\"211\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Your Kick should start to sound like this:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/w.soundcloud.com\/player\/?url=https%3A\/\/api.soundcloud.com\/tracks\/135489296&amp;color=ff5500&amp;auto_play=false&amp;hide_related=false&amp;show_artwork=true\" frameborder=\"no\" scrolling=\"no\" width=\"100%\" height=\"166\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3>Effects<\/h3>\n<p>Switch to Z3TA+ 2\u2019s effects page and you can add variations of effects chains to enhance the sound.
